Help for Japan
On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale. Subsequently, the coastline was hit by tsunamis as high as 10 metres.

ETA: A second quake, 6.6-Richter, subsequently hit Japan. In addition, there have been reports of a possible meltdown at a nuclear plant in Fukushima, with several casualties.

We are organising [community profile] help_japan in response to this crisis. Time is of the utmost urgency at present, so please read this post but do not get too hung up over the details.

Help for Yunnan
Please also remember that a 5.8-Richter earthquake struck Yunnan province in China on March 10. As many as 130,000 people have lost their homes. Electricity and water supplies have been cut off, roads are damaged, and infrastructure is wrecked.

A list of charities rendering aid to Yunnan may be found here.

Do keep both countries in mind when making your offers and selecting charities/causes. Of course, it is preferable to support the victims of both disasters.

An incomplete list of charities is under this cut. If you have more links, do add them in the comments here.

Dreamwidth looks fantastic on paper.I tried very early on to get ilvnoved with Dreamwidth. I am not a coder. I was pretty much shunted to Blog about us! status. I'm a sysadmin. My offers of sysadmin help were met with Sure, you can help! and then getting ignored when I would ask for details of where I could help (ie. We need help with X would not come with access to X). My offers of help with support stuff were met with, We're doing everything the way LiveJournal did it, only this time With Feeling! Suggestions on how to improve/change/update things were ignored. Offers of assistance in various areas were ignored. I know you can't change the world overnight, but it became apparent to me that the only diversity encouraged in DW are for coders and LJ-ex-cronies. After months of trying to get ilvnoved I redirected my energies for other Open Source projects that can use them.Yeah, I'm bitter about my experiences with DW. I wish them the best and I hope they're still around 10 yrs from now. But everytime I read about how open DW is I can't help but think, Sure, it's open for everyone but me and probably others.

Startups have other aeuenvs for raising capital, including both foundations and personal connections (and those are what we're trying to take advantage of for our own funding as well). We won't be the only funder in the world, and we can't and won't do it all, especially in our first year. We're focusing on adding value in a way that no one else is: finding what's proven, effective, and scalable, and supporting it with total openness.
